Traditional site measurements and drawings remain important, but Mark saw an opportunity to preserve more of the physical site for the design team to review later. A 3D capture creates a digital record of the surroundings that can be revisited in the office while the scaffold is being planned. 

“Typically, we’ve come from scaffolding. Our core business is an engineering firm specialising in scaffolding design.” 

That record helps the team assess scaffold positioning, tie locations, base conditions, heights, angles, access requirements, and potential installation conflicts before crews begin work. According to the project background, a scaffold model can be developed in a matter of hours, while resolving the same issues during installation could take a team four to five days.

“Our customers were looking for fast and easy products to be using, that were accurate and would save them time and money.” 

For Mark, moving more problem-solving into the modeling stage can reduce installation time, transport requirements, labor costs, and unnecessary rework. 


Making the proposed design easier to understand 

The captured site also gives Onsite Scanning Solutions another way to communicate with clients and other project stakeholders. By combining scan data with imagery capture, the team can place visual reference points throughout the scanned environment. 

“Onsite Scanning was founded on the principle of trying to support our customers, and that aligned perfectly with the FJD Trion range.”

“So Onsite Scanning has come from delivering scans for our clients, and we’re also transitioning our clients into doing scans for themselves because they are so easy to do with the [FJD] Trion range.” 

That shift opened another path for the business. Onsite Scanning Solutions can continue handling professional scanning projects while also supporting teams that want to develop their own internal capture capability. 

“And so we have no issues at all moving them towards scanning for themselves.” 

For those customers, the practical requirement is straightforward: the technology needs to fit into everyday work without creating unnecessary complexity. 

Taking the same idea beyond scaffolding 

Scaffolding remains central to Mark’s experience, but he sees similar challenges across other industries. Teams still lose time to repeated site measurements, incomplete field information, return visits, and design issues that become visible too late. 

“However, we’ve noticed that the 3D capture and modelling suits so many other industries, and we’re seeing how many industries are starting to change the way they’re doing their work, finding efficiencies in both time and money, getting those accurate measurements quickly and easily.”

The underlying idea is broader than any one type of project: capture the physical environment, bring that information back into the office, and use it to support planning, modeling, and communication. 

“And so it’s been amazing seeing just how quickly industries are adopting to this technology, and we love being at the forefront of it with FJD [Trion].”
